About the company

Basalt Architects are leaders in the development of geothermal hospitality architecture. Our projects include many of Iceland´s best known wellness destinations, including all phases of the Blue Lagoon, Geosea, Vök, Guðlaug and Hofsós swimming pool, and our portfolio is still expanding, with projects currently in design. Building on experience, Basalt also take on expert advisory roles, both locally and abroad. Having accumulated the highest distinctions among its peers, including the 2018 Icelandic Design Award for our contribution to the development of Icelandic bathing culture, and the only official Icelandic Architecture Award to date, Basalt have shown their ability to push the quality of professional standards. Basalt Architect´s clients, The Blue Lagoon and Lava Centre respectively, have received the Icelandic Design Award for Best Investment in Design. We strongly believe that a building revolves around people and it is not merely an architectural form. Architecture must be closely integrated with its surroundings in careful consideration of its functions and social context, thereby enhancing and heightening quality of life. Our approach is honest and authentic in the spirit of creating a collaborative team to produce high quality architecture. Basalt Architects is committed to developing and realizing a holistic concept of sustainability that weighs financial, cultural and social issues as well as wider environmental aspirations. We design sustainable solutions that focus on the environment, the user, society and the overall economy. We constantly challenge the concept of sustainability, because we believe that each project must reach new standards. We build from our experience but we are also constantly looking for new ways to optimize our design. Basalt are founding members of the Icelandic Green Building Council and members of Nordic Built. Basalt are currently working on a number of projects adhering to BREEAM.
